Manufacture of beaten materials, packaging, furniture, veneer, particle board and other wood products.

We are building our environmental management system in line with our objectives to contribute and minimise the footprint we leave on the environment.

All our production lines are certified to the international standard ISO 14001:2015 – Environmental Management Systems. As part of our adopted environmental policy, we carry out an environmental risk analysis and assessment of all our processes and take the necessary precautions against those risks that we consider to be hazardous. According to the results obtained, we create action plans and identify areas for improvement to maximize our efficiency.

Sustainable forest management

Forests are the world’s most valuable natural resource for their social and ecological functions. The most important factor in managing forests sustainably is to ensure their economic, social and environmental management. Like any other living thing, trees are born, grow, mature, age and die. Forest maintenance activities help to identify trees that have reached the end of their life cycle or those intended for use and, on the basis of their species, biological structure, and other indicators, and by means of various techniques, different types of felling appropriate to the respective management of the forest plantation are planned and derived in accordance with the measures envisaged in the forest management plans and programmes. The raw materials used in our enterprises consist of materials obtained during the restoration and maintenance activities carried out for the sustainable management of our forests. At Kastamonu Entegre, we process these raw materials and convert them into products of economic value, while making sure that the forests are maintained in good condition.

In 2019, we planted 92,000 poplar trees on 864 acres of land dedicated to intensive tree production , which we leased for 32 years in the town. Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Our goal is to plant an additional 20,000 saplings by the end of 2022 to expand the project to a total of 97,700 planted saplings.

Wood is the main raw material for our manufacturing operations and as part of our strategies to preserve the balance of nature, we take care to source it from sustainable sources and use the material efficiently.

Kastamonu Bulgaria PLC manages its production with respect for the environment and is fully aware of its social responsibilities, having increased its environmental sensitivity by obtaining FSC® Forest Stewardship Council® certification (FSC® C112488). The FSC® certification certifies that the raw materials used in production are sourced from responsibly managed forests and other controlled sources, verified and certified by an independent certification body

Ū K A I  (Lithuania)

Organization details

Small – Medium Enterprise

Website: ukai.eu

Activities description

Ū K A I is innovative and circular fashion brand that helps to recover waste materials from our planet.

At first, the main business idea was to create exclusive socks for everyday use. As time went by, the owners wanted their products to have a positive environmental impact on our Earth and people. After a long search, they discovered yarns made from recycled plastic bottles. To reduce plastic waste, the company supports Plastic Bank organization on their plastic offsetting program. As a result, by just giving one pair of socks, the customer helps to reduce the negative environmental impact of 50 plastic bottles.

The company is innovators in the socks industry because there are only a few socks brands that use these innovative yarns at socks manufacturing. 2020-11-15 the Kickstarter project have been ended successfully and the owners are so happy to know that their idea, their product is necessary for people, they appreciate it! All together we have reduced 55 590 plastic bottles!

The recycled plastic bottle yarns are made in fabric that doesn’t use water, chemicals and reduce their CO2 emissions and energy usage. It means that by wearing ŪKAI socks you are making lower impact to the Earth. ŪKAI supports SEAQUAL INITIATIVE. SEAQUAL INITIATIVE works with NGOs, fishermen, authorities and local communities to help clean our oceans. Marine litter from our beaches, ocean floor and surface, rivers and estuaries is collected by clean-up programs. It is sorted into different material types and the plastic portion is cleaned and transformed into SEAQUAL® MARINE PLASTIC. Environmentally conscious brands and manufacturers then transform this new, fully traceable raw material into inspiring sustainable products for every aspect of our lives. Consumer purchasing power is one of the most powerful tools for change. In choosing products containing SEAQUAL® MARINE PLASTIC, you are helping to clean our oceans.

And socks are just beginning. The company is planning to make washing bags that protect from microplastic, shoes from recycled materials, to have collaborations with water sports teams, museums, participate in eco events.

Why are we called “ŪKAI”? In Lithuanian, Ūkai means mist, fog – a nature phenomenon that makes things look gray and toned down in colour, abstract in their shape. It resembles the style and colour palette of the socks we create. Ūkai is a phenomenon of the Earth – our Planet. We love the Earth and we strongly believe by making conscious everyday steps we can make our planet cleaner and our future – brighter.

The zero waste concept is based on not just disposing of your waste separately and recycling it, but not creating waste in the first place. In the current system we live in, this is not yet entirely possible, but it is an important goal towards which we can make significant changes.

As consumers, we have a strong influence on businesses by choosing whether or not to buy a product or service. And this can already lead to a change in the system itself. At the core of Zero waste is above all responsible and conscious shopping. Buying only what we need, replacing disposable products like plastic bags, cups, utensils, etc. with reusable ones, by taking a little time to separately dispose of what remains, we can reduce a large part of our waste.

Website: okomon.ee

Activities description

We are Maria and Maris, and we wish that each of us would at least consider our consumption habits and try to find a more environmentally friendly alternative for some of the everyday items or products, with our help.

For us, it all started with a wonderful summer picnic with kids. We packed our things and drove to the beach for a picnic with two families, where we ate, drank, played, swam… and then ate and played some more. When we started packing to go back home, it seemed that the generated waste was more than the initial food and drink supplies we brought. At that moment, we exchanged a meaningful look and after that picnic, we both decided that it’s high time to contribute to creating a cleaner environment. Gradually, we began replacing various products and items in our homes with cleaner, more natural, and less packaged alternatives.

Now, we want to share these life-changing discoveries with you! In today’s fast-paced life, many purchasing decisions are made based on convenience and product availability, and often products end up in the shopping cart for which a more sustainable option actually exists. It’s these options that we want to offer you, and we hope that everyone can find something essential in Ökomon’s online store, and together, we can make the Earth a happier place! 🙂

As forests disappear, so do their inhabitants, bound by strong bonds of dependence. Due to vigorous human activity, the old groves, which make up 80% of the territory of Lithuania, have disappeared, and with them – many species that lived inside.

The idea of establishing a foundation to preserve the old-growth forests of Lithuania arose after seeing the public interest in the documentary “Ancient Woods”. Director, Mindaugas Survila, set aside the money it made, 60 thousand euros, towards purchasing the first forest plots, positioned to become the first public, Lithuanian ancient forest.

Further activities of the foundation will be based on privately donated funds, dedicated to the acquisition of forest plots. In this way, forests will be protected from felling and the first ancient forest in Lithuania will be established.

Company

Website: kietaviskiu.lt

Activities description

Kietaviskes Greenhouses form the largest complex of greenhouses in the Baltic States. The company uses the latest technologies to maintain a microclimate reminiscent of Lithuanian summer, which allows them to bring fresh vegetables to people‘s table all year round. It also currently offers 17 varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce.

The history of Kietaviskes Greenhouses’ current facilities stretches back 30 years, when they were first set and seeded with roses to make use of the surplus heat generated by the nearby Elektrenai Power Plant. Back then, women from the surrounding cities and towns were employed to care for these roses.
Having purchased this infrastructure in 1987 and replacing roses with fresh vegetables, social responsibility and respect for the environment have been part of this company DNA since the first day. It works to reduce the impact on the climate, runs various initiatives to stop food waste, and organizes educational field trips for both children and adults.

Kietaviskes Greenhouses doesn‘t use plastic for packing vegetables anymore, and made the drastic decision to replace it with environmentally friendly packaging. In 2022, the company was the first among all vegetable producers in Lithuania to abandon the traditional plastic pots used for some products. It also replaced the plastic covering for lettuce with packing made of 80% paper. The result – it was avoided to produce 16 tons of new plastic throughout the year.

In 2021, Kietaviskes Greenhouses created its version of “Beauty and the Beast” – a project to educate society about non-standard-shaped vegetables. Recognized at the ADC’21 Advertising Festival, this initiative also helped save over 100 tons of food in a year, which could have resulted in almost 200 tons of carbon emissions released into the atmosphere. The company sells all shapes of vegetables at supermarkets and also use them to make juice. Plus, we donate surplus food to various non-profits and volunteer organizations.

We live in a very interesting transformation period where traditional linear economy is still cost-effective but becomes boring and immature. At the same time circular economy and sustainable, free of greenwashing approach becomes not only trendy, creates added value but are the key conditions for long term strategic planning.

In case of starting a new businesses or developing existing ones, rational thinking just simply can’t ignore sustainability. Remaining linear, using greenwashing is just a short term strategy – convenient but… inadequate and temporary.

IN COOPERATION WITH KAUNAS UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY CENTRE FOR PACKAGING INNOVATIONS AND RESEARCH, PACK’N GREEN IS DEVELOPING SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING PROJECT.

Activities description

EcoBioFilm’s approach to sustainable packaging
Materials based on biopolymers have rapidly gained interest in recent times for the role of plastic alternatives, for increased activity in the development of sustainable materials, for packaging.

Unfortunately, to date, the experiment on the production and use of biodegradable packaging polymer materials, which has been going on for more than thirty years, has not only failed to produce an unambiguous positive result, but also posed many new unresolved issues. There is no reason to wait for biodegradable polymers era to begin to deal with these problems. Packaging has become the first industry to be targeted by specific waste legislation, arising from the EU’s Directive 94/62/EC on Packaging and Packaging Waste. In accordance with the EU regulation food packaging must be manufactured from materials with appropriately chemical composition, meeting safety requirements.

With growing awareness about environmental concerns, the biodegradable nature of cellulose film has made it an ideal choice in the development of sustainable solutions for packaging, with the aim of reducing the overall carbon footprint of the packaging industry. Cellulose is the most abundant and renewable functional biopolymer created by nature and it will become one of the most promising polymeric resources. Biodegradability, renewability, and worldwide abundance are the main benefits of cellulose as a raw material. However, chemical processing of cellulose is extremely difficult in general because it is neither meltable nor soluble in water or common solvents.

Like paper, EcoBioFilm is based on cellulose, but instead of this being predominantly physically modified, the raw material (pulp) is disolved into a novel eco-friendly solvent to form cellulose solution.
After dissolution process, this fluid is extruded through a slit with high length-to-width ratio into an liqiud bath where the cellulose is literally regenerated. The product, EcoBioFilm, is formed as a continuous non-fibrous web. Flexibility of the film can be achieved by the incorporation of softening agents, the selection of which is dictated by the end application.

The notable properties of regenerated cellulose films are promising for applications in transparent biodegradable packaging as a substitute for polypropylene and polyethylene.

Activities description

The Lithuanian Fund for Nature (LiFN) is one of the first environmental organizations in Lithuania, founded in 1991. The Fund specialises in the preservation of rare and endangered species, recreating their living habitats. The Fund also regularly organises campaigns and events for schoolchildren, helping them to get to know the environment they are living in and raising much needed awareness about nature, as well as on the impacts of pollution around us.

Currently, LiFN is taking part in 4 big projects. One of them is related to peatland restoration throughout the Lithuania, which also helps lock down CO2 in wet peats. Another project we are implement helps preserve the rare beetle Osmoderma eremita. As this beetle lives only in very old oaks, the effort to save this species also helps to protect old trees from being cut down. We are also involved in raising awareness about overfishing of certain fish species in the past recent years, looking forth to temporarily “give them a break” as we focus on other species for food.

Kurana (Lithuania)

Company

Website: kurana.lt

Activities description

The Kurana company in Pasvaly, founded in 2008, which was the first in the European Union to combine the technological processes of the production of bioethanol for biofuels and electricity and thermal energy from renewable energy sources into one continuous technological chain. “We are a great example of a circular economy, because the primary product we make from grain is spirit, which is mixed into gasoline.

The second product is biogas, which is currently burned in a cogeneration plant to produce electricity and heat. We consume part of it ourselves, and sell part to networks. Also, after the production of biogas, organic fertilizers remain, which travel to the fields, where grain grows, from which we again produce ethanol, and so the circle turns,” says the company’s general director, Jurgis Polujanskas.

The production process begins with grain, which the company buys from Lithuanian farmers. At the factory, the grain is ground, mixed with water and enzymes that help break down the starch in the grain into glucose, and the glucose is converted into primary ethanol, which is further purified. In 2013, a biofuel boiler room was built at the factory, where so-called wood chips are used to produce steam. It is also important that Kurana produces spirit not only from non-food grains, but also from starchy waste.
